In addition to our Exercise Science curriculum, we offer a unique hands-on learning experience through our Health Science Garden Program. We have designed a 1000 square foot organic, soil-based garden which we use for age-based standardized math and science projects throughout the year. This hands-on approach helps to facilitate learning in an important and lasting way. The students also assist with planting, maintaining and harvesting the various vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers and bring compost recycling materials from home. We then allow the kids to eat from the garden, teach them how to prepare meals using the ingredients, and take their harvest home to share with their families.
Our garden at the McGill School of Success is the first San Diego Charter School to be certified as a Garden to Cafe’ program through the San Diego Unified School District. Our garden is now providing food directly for the SDUSD lunch cart so our students eat directly from the garden with vegetables and fruits they planted, maintained and harvested. Let year we provided the entire school with all of their greens.
